About
I’ve been addicted to communications for most of my life (which is strange, given how frequently my wife accuses me of being unable to communicate with her).
I grew up and continue to be a voracious reader and collector of books. I obsessively collected comic books long past the point of reason. I am a magazine and newspaper junkie who still enjoys picking the morning paper off the lawn after it’s been soaked by the sprinkler system (and even though it’s been eviscerated by an idiot owner who thinks the magic formula is fewer journalists + less content + morons for managers = success). And I spend far too much time reading everything I can on the web.
I’ve managed communications programs for nonprofits and small businesses; created the publications program of a liberal arts college in Los Angeles; worked as managing editor of an alternative weekly newspaper; and started a communications design firm that served corporate clients, nonprofits and educational institutions.
My one ill-fated foray outside communications was to buy a bookstore that boasted one of the largest newsstands in the Southeast with more than 5,ooo titles. OK, maybe not really a step outside, but definitely a step in the wrong direction. The less said about it the better. At least I can walk into a bookstore now without breaking into a sweat.
I currently manage corporate communications and public relations for a large nonprofit in Southern California, where I contend with many of the issues I explore in this blog. What an amazing coincidence.
