Client-Vendor Relationship … in the Real World

by Dan Hutson on July 13, 2009

Any graphic designer, writer or other creative professional on the vendor side of the relationship will appreciate this … well, maybe not appreciate but wince in recognition of the absurd truthiness of it. I really enjoyed it when it first hit YouTube a couple of months ago.

For those on the client side of things, watch this again the next time you consider asking creatives to essentially give away their services.

It’s not just creative folks who are at the receiving end of this kind of thing. As a person with responsibility regarding technology purchases in a non-profit, I constantly find myself dealing with the issue of balancing the need to pay a fair price and my responsibility to minimize cost to my organization. I think we do a pretty good job – our vendors consider us to be good customers, but they have given us breaks, and they know perfectly well that I check prices quite carefully.

One thing we NEVER do is order something and THEN haggle on price. Besides being unfair, it’s stupid. After all, who wants to be caught between an unbudgeted expense and a big guy who doesn’t need a bat…
